General Description of Idea:
Although many modernized apartments have already been equipped with package lockers or receptionists to take care of residents’ mail and packages, there are still a lot of apartments where residents’ packages are placed on the hallways. This not only occupies the public space, but also increases the risk of package being stolen. In order to solve this problem, we propose to design an automatic security locker that receives both package and food delivery.

Project Uniqueness:
Different from the traditional locker that uses a combination lock, our locker will be open only when the delivery guy enters the correct shipping number or password by pressing buttons on the panel. In the case of food delivery, the locker can automatically tip the driver with the preset amount of money. The locker also comes with LCD display and speaker to instruct the delivery guy how to place the package or food into the locker. In addition to that, in order to prevent random people from violently accessing the locker, a security system with camera and alarm will be triggered whenever the locker is open without entering the correct password.

High Level Technical Overview:
There are
1. Locker:
The locker will use an electromagnetic lock controlled by a microcontroller.
2. Control Panel:
The control panel includes an LCD display, a speaker, buttons controlled by a microcontroller. The controller is also responsible for sending electric signal to unlock the locker when the user provides the correct password/shipping number.
3. Tipping Module:
This module will be used to tip the correct amount of money to the driver. The detailed realization of this module has not been determined.
4. Security Module:
A security module with alarm and camera will be triggered to capture the person’s face and scare the person away when the locker is unexpectedly open. The logic will be controlled by the microcontroller.
5. Power:
Since this project does not have any power-intensive part, batteries should be sufficient to provide power to our locker.

Project Description

Computed Tomography, often referred to as CT or CAT scans, is a modern technology used for medical imaging. While many people know of this technology, not many people understand how it works. The concepts behind CT scans are theoretical and often hard to visualize. Professor Carney has indicated that a small-scale device for demonstrational purposes will help students gain a more concrete understanding of the technical components behind this device. Using light rather than x-rays, we will design and build a simplified CT device for use as an educational tool.

Design Methodology

We will build a device with three components: a light source, a screen, and a stand to hold the object. After placing an object on the stand and starting the scan, the device will record three projections by rotating either the camera and screen or object. Using the three projections in tandem with an algorithm developed with a graduate student, our device will create a 3D reconstruction of the object.

Hardware

• Motors to rotate camera and screen or object

• Grid of photo sensors built into screen

• Light source

• Power source for each of these components

• Control system for timing between movement, light on, and sensor readings
