Safe Walk hat

#Problem

Vision impaired people use canes. Canes are effective, but it can detect something just near the person and you have to carry it. We want to build a cane free device that could also detect objects approaching the person, which canes can not detect. We would like to implement a comfortable device that is easily carryable for blind people when they walk around.

#Solution Overview

To protect people with visually impairment from any accident, we thought of a device that notifies people with visual impairment when an object with higher speed than people is approaching. Our solution includes two components. First component is a hat integrated with 6 doppler radar sensors facing six different direction, so that sensors can cover 360 degree. Second component is a speaker located in the device. If an object with higher speed than people walking pace is coming toward people with visual impairment, the device calculates the speed and direction of the object coming, determines level of danger, and send signal to a speaker to notify users.

#Solution Components

#Sensor Subsystem
In order to detect an object coming toward people with visual impairment, we integrated six sensors facing six different direction front, behind, front left, front right, behind left, behind right so that the device can cover 360 degree. We are going to use doppler radar sensors to detect an object coming.

#Control Subsystem
1. The sensors located at the front, behind, left, and right of the cap detect the objects or vehicles if they are in the range of the sensors. The mini speaker, which is attached also at the cap, alerts the blind person saying “Approaching from Front” , or just “Front”.
2. When the user turns on the cap, the speaker automatically tells the remaining of the battery saying, for example, “40%” or “60%”.
3. When 20 % of battery lefts, it also alerts the user saying “Low battery”. So the user can recharge the battery ahead.

#Power Subsystem
We will be using 1.5v rechargeable battery. The sensor, LEDs, and vibration motor do not require that much of power so we think 1.5v is enough.

#Criterion for Success

We believe this cap would enhance blind people to safely cross the crosswalk and walk around with getting alerts on approaching objects (people and vehicles)
