Activity 4: Visualization Concept Design of UIUC Demographics
Due: In-class on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017 at 9:30am
Team: This is a solo assignment.
Grading: This assignment is the mid-week activity for Experience 3,
worth 15 points. There is no partial credit.
No Late Submissions: We will be using the
solution to this activity in lecture on Thursday; no late submissions
will be accepted.
Introduction
This activity is the first non-digital activity, where you will be creating
a hand-drawn visualization and turning it in at the beginning of class.
We may spend class time discussing the visualizations created, so be prepared
to talk about your work to the class.
Assignment
Using the dataset we've been working with (demographics at UIUC), create
a hand-draw a visualization concept design that uses data from the dataset.

You can use data found in the dataset or assume that more data has
been added to the dataset (eg: summaries over years, etc)

You can use data found in the dataset or assume that the data has been
processed (eg: any form of statistics, even if we haven't done it yet)
This activity is meant to be a creative experience, allowing you
to think of interesting ways to present the UIUC demographics dataset.
It is absolutely not necessary to create a hand-drawn visualization using
all 7,300+ data points -- instead, you should focus on the overall idea
of the visualization and sketch enough data points to show the overall
design of your idea.

You are creating a concept design, not a complete visualization.
We will use the power of our computer to complete an accurate visualization.

Even as a concept design, it should be very clear what data you are
encoding and what the entire visualization would look like when finished.

You should use color, shading, size, texture, and/or any other visual
encoding technique you learned from lecture. The goal is to show off
your concept design and every can imagine what your complete visualization
would look like when finished.
Submission
You will turn this visualization in at the start of lecture on Thursday.
We may spend class time discussing the visualizations created, so be prepared
to talk about your work to the class.
