LED-Light printing Device upgrade

Problem statement: In the last Tuesday section, Rick Kessigner brings his LED light printing device to the class and gives a short lecture about the LED light printing. After the lecture, we had a brief talk with him about how to improve his device and make it more convenient for people to use it. The core problem is how to control the brightness area and fade area. In the original device, there is no way people can control the size of the brightness area and the fade area. Also, Rick mentioned a problem about the mobility. When he uses the device,he need use the wire to provide the power.

Proposed Solution: In our design, we are going to implement the circuits and control system into the LED strip. For the circuits part, we can use the LED drivers and potentiometers as our main components. To control the brightness of the LED strip, we can adjust the multiple potentiometers to fulfill our requirements. In that way, people who use this device can control the area of brightness and fade. This is our main focus on this project. In our design,we can implement the battery to the device. In that way, people can carry this device to the outdoor activities. To implement the battery part, we need choose the Lithum battery which provide the stable power to the device. Also to ensure the functionability of the device, we need to build the low-voltage protecter and high-amps protecter.

Components
1.circuits part
LED Drivers: the function of the LED Drivers is to convert higher voltage, alternating current to the low voltage and direct current. In our design, we will choose to use the internal LED drivers to save more power. The specific type of the LED drivers we might use is the constant current drivers, the current is about 700mA and the voltage range is about 4-13V.

Potentiometers: We are probably choose to use the DC 0-10V Potentiometers. Both Mean Well driver with DC 1-10V and DC 0- 10V are suitable for our design, but DC 1-10V don’t have dim-off function.

LEDS: We will build several LED strips independent from each other which will then be assembled and manipulated by a single or multiple potentiometers/ LED drivers as stated above.

2.Battery part:
Lithum battery: we will use the INR18650-25R Lithium Li-ion battery which provide us 3.7V, and 2500mAH. Those type of the battery are rechargeable.
DC/DC converter: A Buck converter for step down conversion or a boost converter for the step up conversion.
3. Housing part:
For this part Rick asked us to make the casing as light as possible and, if in our capacity to make it out of plastic. For this we thought of modeling the housing in a CAD program (Solid Edge) to later 3D print it with an adequate printing technique and material (withstand high change in temperature, rigid, light) which we will later explore.

Laser Harp MIDI Controller with Musical Articulations

Featured Project

Electronic music concerts usually need eye-catching visual aids to create a certain atmosphere. Laser musical instruments is a great way to do this. We have been thinking of this project for a while and it was ECE445 that made this laser harp come true. The novelty of this project is that the harp-like laser device mainly focuses on playing articulations with laser and sensors, as a true universal MIDI controller, to control timbres that are synthesized or sampled. Articulations include piano/forte, vibrato, tremolo, and portamento. With the help of Professors and TAs, we learned how to pick right the components, design PCB, soldering, and program microcontroller. Those skills are not only useful in this class but also really important to electrical engineers. Also, we learned how to use individual strengths, combined with effective teamwork, in the pursuit of meaningful goals.
