Description: The main purpose of any control system is to produce accurate regulation for optimal performance and to protect the plant from exceeding its own physical limitations through the execution of a unique collection of tasks which must be accomplished in coordination with one another to achieve a particular goal. The control system architecture is a major contributor to the optimization of the controller performance. Still, additional improvements can be sought while a reduction in the overall life cycle cost and weight are increasingly a driving factor in system development. The control system architecture can be a means to affect net weight and system costs. The transition from a centralized, controller topology to a distributed system is principal to extracting these system improvements. To allow communication within a distributed system many communication protocols could be used. At the present time Ethernet is being considered as the primary means of communication within Rolls-Royce Corporation for controls applications. This project will design and develop a Babbling idiot that can be applied to a deterministic Ethernet network to disrupt communication. This device needs to act as a node on the distributed system, see attached figure. The node needs to babble, i.e. supply far to much data, supply repetitive data, to try and disrupt engine control.
