Description: We will design and build an energy-saving device to detect and disable wasteful stand-by power, also known as vampire power. We plan to build a circuit that will be able to cut off and restore power to a device while using less power than the standby power of the device. We will incorporate the circuit into a power strip which will function for various electronic devices that commonly use stand-by power. We plan to link devices that are dependent on each other. For instance, when a television is disabled, auxiliary devices, like stereos and DVD players, will also be shut off. One of our goals for this project is to cut down a device's yearly stand-by power consumption by at least 75%. This will cut down on power waste and decrease the power bill of the consumer, while requiring no lifestyle changes on their part. Another one of our goals is to design the circuit to accommodate different types of devices. This will involve knowledge of power, switching/relaying mechanisms, AC to DC conversion, along with an understanding of different types of loads. It will also involve teamwork and time management.
