Description: Microcavity Discharge, or Microdischarge, devices are a new technology being developed at the University of Illinois for use in a large range of applications. These devices are essentially arrays of light sources that have a number of advantages over both filament lighting as well as LEDís, some of which include being inexpensive, energy efficient, and flexible. Depending on what gas is used to fill the cavities of the microdischarge devices, different wavelengths of light will be emitted. Since it has been determined that blue light contains the energy necessary to treat a number of skin conditions, including jaundice, our project will be to develop a microdischarge bandage which can be used to treat a patient in hopes of eliminating the need for a hospital stay. This will be an extension of work already in progress at the Laboratory of Optical of Physics and Engineering (LOPE) here on campus, but our specific goals will be to fabricate and optimize the devices as well as develop a vacuum packaging and flexible substrate to make them feasible as bandages.
