Time and Place
- Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:30-10:50am
- ECEB 3081
Texts
- Material you need to know for the exams will be on the slides. Some additional useful references are on reserve for this course at the Grainger Engineering Library. Others will be listed here, if specific questions come up in class.
- Useful Matlab Tutorial
- MP1 and MP2: The main thing you need for MP1 is to understand linear algebra and PCA. I strongly recommend Gilbert Strang's textbook, Introduction to Linear Algebra. In particular, read chapter 7 on image processing, SVD, and PCA.
- MP3, MP4: L. Rabiner and B.W. Juang, Fundamentals of Speech Recognition, Prentice-Hall, 1993.
Instructors
- Mark Hasegawa-Johnson, jhasegaw (Office Hours: none this week)
- Amit Das, amitdas (Office Hours: Fridays 4:00-5:00PM, Beckman 2145)
Grading
- Points are allocated to the two types of assignments:
- 50%: three midterm exams, covering material on the lecture slides, including facts and sample problems worked there.
- 50%: seven MPs.
- Grade cutoffs are as follows.
- 90%: A-, 94%: A, 99%: A+
- 75%: B-, 80%: B, 85%: B+
- 60%: C-, 65%: C, 70%: C+
- 45%: D-, 50%: D, 55%: D+
Collaboration Policy
Homework problems should be written in groups of two or three students (no more than three). Each group of three students should work independently of every other. Only one of the three should submit the assignment. The assignment should list all three authors.
Different groups should not work together. You will lose points if:
- Identical text. If your narrative contains a full sentence that is identical to a sentence in any other group's report, or in any document available on line, then you will lose points.
- Results that are not your own. If we have any reason to believe that the results in your table or figure were not generated using the same code that you submit, then we will investigate, and you may lose points.
- Identical figures without attribution. You may copy a figure from the internet, or from another group, if the caption of that figure includes a citation of the original source (if your friend copies a figure from you, make sure that she cites you, in the caption, as the author of the figure). A figure copied without attribution will lose points.
- Code that is too similar to that of another group. If the order of commands in your code is too similar to that of another group (or any online source), it will be up to the TA to determine whether or not he believes that you were copying from another group (or from an online source).
Late Homework and Conflict Exams
Conflict exams and homework deadline extensions are granted as follows:
- More than 96 hours advance notice: Most reasonable justifications for an extension will be accepted only if you make the request at least 96 hours in advance. Note: this is 96 hours before the start of the exam, not the end of the exam.
- Extensions are generally not granted without advanced notice, except as listed below.
- Submitting your assignment a few minutes late is fine, where the definition of "a few" depends on how good your excuse is. Five minutes late is fine, even without an excuse. Fifteen minutes late is not OK, unless you have a valid excuse of some kind.
- Any assignment can be submitted any time, up until the end of December 13, with a fifty percent late penalty. This applies also to partial submissions, for example: You turned in 12 points out of 16 before the first deadline of the MP. Then you turn in the remaining 4 points before the Dec 13 deadline. Assuming you score 100 percent on each of those submissions, your total score would be 12 + 0.5(4) = 14.
