About the Course

Recent years have seen a dramatic growth of natural language text data, including web pages, news articles, scientific literature, emails, enterprise documents, and social media such as blog articles, forum posts, product reviews, and tweets. Text data contain all kinds of knowledge about the world and human opinions and preferences, thus offering great opportunities for analyzing and mining vast amounts of text data ("big text data") to support user tasks and optimize decision making in all application domains. They play an important role in all big data applications. Text mining is the process of converting big unstructured text data into actionable knowledge to support user tasks and decision making. CS 591txt is a seminar on current topics in the text mining field, which is closely related to data mining, natural language processing, information retrieval, and machine learning. Students will read, discuss, and analyze the latest research/technology in text mining techniques and applications or latest book chapters on text mining and applications.
