Governing an Internet

No one company owns it, no one nation regulates it, no one authority controls it. Yet the Internet is the most powerful global commons for the exchange of trade and ideas ever conceived. How can we enhance its scalability and security when no one is in charge? Using the struggle to control Internet Protocol address exhaustion and ownership as a touchstone, Jon Peterson will give a detailed perspective of the multi-stakeholder administrative model of the Internet, showing its strengths and its weaknesses. As the Internet becomes ever more entwined in the everyday life of the world's population, will we be able to preserve the qualities that made the Internet so successful?

Biography

Jon Peterson is Neustar's first Distinguished Engineer, and is currently a member of the Internet Architecture Board (IAB). He served on the steering group of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) as co-Area Director of the Transport area from 2003 to 2006, and subsequently the Real-time Applications and Infrastructure (RAI) area, from 2006 to 2009. He has considerable experience in Internet governance and the design of protocol standards. His work has also extended to numerous other standards and technical coordination organizations, including the ITU-T, the Liberty Alliance and ICANN, where he served on the Security and Stability Advisory Committee. His primary interests are immediate personal communications, geolocation, media delivery, security and privacy. Previous to Neustar, Jon worked in the global architecture group at Level3 Communications.
