Course Description

The objective is to study the practical aspects, theory, implementation, and utilization of optimization in conjunction with analysis tools. This class aims to acquaint the students with the state-of-the-art design optimization techniques and their applications to engineering design problems. Applications include various engineering problems, such as large-scale civil structures and mechanical systems. In addition to classical methods, we will introduce the modern and powerful topology optimization methods together with the application to material and structural systems. Newest developments in the area of design optimization and topology optimization methods will be introduced in the context of various engineering problems. Students will also be introduced with rapid prototyping and 3D printing techniques, which relates to emerging trends in the field. The class also features a project, which will use those state-of-the-art techniques and methods, as well as practical design optimization problems from various engineering industries.
