Machine Problems

All Machine Problems (MPs) will be posted here. There will be about four MPs.

  • MP 1 out. Due: Sep 30, 2010 (Thursday). [Solution outline] [Candidate solution: 1] [Candidate solution: 2]
  • MP 2 out. Due: Oct 31, 2010 (Sunday). [Solution outline] [Candidate solution: 1] [Candidate solution: 2]
    • Clarification 1: The load-balance in both the cases (storage and message overhead) is only *expected* (average) load balance rather than exact. So, it is not necessary to transfer keys around at run-time to get load balance. The system can be optimized for the uniformly-at-random workload.
    • Clarification 2: You should *not* replicate any internal nodes/leaves of the binary tree. You have to find out an embedding of the nodes to the machines which balances the load of the incoming requests across all the machines.
  • MP 3 out. Due: Dec 05, 2010 (Sunday). Extended deadline: Dec 06, 2010 (5 PM) (11:59 PM)

Homework Assignments

Homework assignments (HWs) will be posted here. There will be about six HWs, and they will be handed out (approximately) bi-weekly. We will stagger HW deadlines so that they do not overlap with MP deadlines.

For HWs, you must submit hardcopy solutions that are typed. Figures may be drawn by hand. Handwritten solutions will be returned without being graded. For each homework, please make sure each new problem solution starts on a fresh page, and that your name appears at the top of each sheet. Homeworks are due at the start of the lecture on the due-date (no excuses).

Unless otherwise specified, the only resources you can avail of in your HWs are the provided course materials (slides, textbooks, etc.), and communication with instructor/TA via newsgroup and e-mail.

Exams

Regrading Policy: All regrade requests must be submitted back within 1 week of the graded homeworks being returned. Regrade requests must be in writing on a separate piece of paper, and must indicate the question number(s) and part(s) to regrade. All regrading decisions will be final.
